COSHH risk assessment
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
In order to comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 (as amended) there is a requirement to carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks associated with hazardous substances connected with work undertaken by their employees.
Assessments are a legal requirement under Regulation 6(1) of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (as amended). They have two main objectives:
- To evaluate the risks to health from hazardous substances and identify the steps required to either prevent, or, reduce the risk to health.
- To establish what has to be done to control these risks and meet the requirements of the rest of the COSHH Regulations.
It is illegal to carry out work, which may expose people to hazardous substances unless an assessment has been made. The assessments must be updated (Regulation 6(3)) whenever there are changes which may affect exposure or reasons to suspect they are invalid.
